Deborah Kay Kubisiak, better known as Debbie “The Brat”, was never one to shy away from a good laugh. Born on October 19, 1953, in Elkhart, Indiana, she graced the world with her spirited presence for 69 fabulous years before passing away on June 1, 2023, in Niles, MI, following a recent illness.
Debbie was the life of the party, and her family wouldn’t have it any other way. She is survived by her loving husband, Bert Kubisiak, who will surely miss their trips to the casino together. Her daughter, Tonya Kubisiak, will continue to keep the shopping tradition alive in her mother’s memory. Debbie also leaves behind her brother, Charles Ernsberger. She is reunited with her late parents, Francis and Evelyn (Davis) Ernsberger, sister Patti Ernsberger, and other family members who were waiting for her.
Debbie spent most of her life as a bartender and waitress, a role in which she thrived. She became the trusted confidant of many, always ready with a listening ear, a quick wit, and a strong pour. Her spunky attitude and infectious laughter earned her the nickname “The Brat”, a title she wore proudly as she became a local legend around town.
Debbie could be found shopping with her daughter, Tonya, or trying her luck at the casino with her husband, Bert. These pastimes brought her great joy. In addition to her love for shopping and gambling, Debbie was known for her ability to make friends with just about anyone. She was the kind of person who could strike up a conversation with a stranger in line at the grocery store and leave them feeling like they’d made a friend.
She was known for baking and helping others out. She baked around holidays or just because it was someone’s birthday. She enjoyed seeing people eat and enjoy her baked goods. She had a big heart and a caring soul. She did her best to make people happy and smile.
As we gather to celebrate the life of this extraordinary woman, we can almost hear her laughter echoing through the halls of the afterlife, as she regales her fellow spirits with tales of her adventures on Earth.
Debbie “The Brat” Kubisiak may have left us physically, but her spirit and her laughter will live on in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her. As we raise a glass in her memory, let us remember the laughter, the love, and the life of a woman who truly embodied the phrase “live, laugh, love.” Cheers to you, Debbie. May the next round be on the house.
