John Kuriata, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2023, in Dowagiac, Michigan, at the age of 77. Born on July 11, 1946, in Ettlingen, Germany, to the late Hipolit and Lidia (Sekivel) Kuriata, John’s early years were the foundation of a life characterized by love, resilience, and a remarkable work ethic.
In 1975, John’s life was forever changed when he married the love of his life, Maureen T. (Sullivan) Kuriata, in a beautiful ceremony in Dowagiac. Their union was blessed with three wonderful children: Royce (Tracie) Kuriata of Dowagiac, Denise (William) Caldwell of Grandville, and Shaun (Richelle) Kuriata of Stevensville. John’s joy multiplied with the arrival of his three grandchildren, Kyra Kuriata, Will Caldwell Jr., and Deja Caldwell, who became the apples of his eye.
John’s siblings, Daniel, Walter, Edward, Ted Kuriata, and Marie Mennite, all predeceased him, but the memories they shared continue to resonate with those who knew the Kuriata family.
He worked at Ameriwood Industries for 20+ years in product development, where he traveled extensively setting up furniture trade shows, which John loved this part of his job very much. His colleagues knew him as a man who took immense pride in his craft, approaching each task with a calm and methodical demeanor. John’s service in the army as a sharpshooter was a testament to his discipline and skill, qualities that he carried throughout his life.
Beyond his professional achievements, John was a man who was always on the move, engaging in various activities and interests. He was known for his unshakeable character; no problem was too great to overcome, and his calm and collected nature was a source of strength for all who knew him. John’s sense of humor was a beacon of light, always ready to lift the spirits of those around him with a well-timed joke or a playful remark.
John’s heart was as vast as his smile, and he was the epitome of selflessness. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always the first to lend a helping hand. He was a familiar sight around town, driving around to catch up with friends and acquaintances. To John, no one was a stranger, and he had the unique ability to make everyone feel like an old friend.
His love for his family was unparalleled, and he was the quintessential family man. John was not only handy around the house but also in life, always ready to fix a problem or offer wise counsel. His loving nature was the glue that held his family together, and his legacy of love and selflessness will continue to live on through them.
