H. James “Jim” Payne, a cherished soul revered for his boundless love and selflessness, completed his earthly journey on February 22, 2024, the very day that marked his 78th year of a life well-lived. Born on February 22, 1946, in Niles, Michigan, Jim’s life was a testament to the power of generosity and the importance of family. He departed this world in the same town that he first called home, surrounded by the love and warmth of his dear family.
Jim was the loving husband of Dawn Payne, with whom he shared a lifetime of joy and companionship. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Catherine (Connors) Payne, his son Tony Payne, his brother Chuck Alvord, his father-in-law Bob DeMain. Jim’s legacy continues through his children, Andrew Payne, April (Dirk) Arends, and Michael (Kate) Yates, as well as his daughter-in-law Stephanie (Tony). He was the proud patriarch of a large and loving family, including over one hundred nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
Jim was a devoted brother to Kathleen Jankoviak, Raymond Payne, Tim (Melissa) Payne, Therese Bella, Jeff (Christine) Payne, Michael (Mary) Payne, Mary Payne, Denise Casey, Doris (Bill) Beckman, Peter (Kay) Payne, Colleen Raven, Corrine (Tim) Craig, Suzette (Donald) Kennedy, Rhea Yoder, Kerry (Laura) Payne, Tom (Brenda) Payne, and Thad (Emma) Payne. His mother-in-law Doris DeMain, step mother-in-law, Helene DeMain, brother-in-law Rob DeMain, sister-in-law Deirdre “Dee” (Mike) Leets and his aunt Judy Parker, who also survive him.
The joy of his life was his grandchildren, Rachel, Alyssa, Isaiah, Cayden, Libi, Willem, Luca, and Ariya, who will forever hold their “Papa” and “Grandpa” in their hearts as a symbol of unconditional love and support.
Jim was a man of many talents and interests. A Marine during the Vietnam War, he served his country with honor and pride. For many years Jim worked construction and printing businesses, demonstrating his aptitude for leadership and his commitment to providing for his family.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim will be remembered as the original drummer for Tommy James and the Shondells. However, it was his role as a devoted husband, proud papa, grandpa, and friend that defined him. Jim’s life was anchored by his personal relationship with his savior, Jesus Christ. When asked if he felt the presence of God during his illness, Jim’s faith in God was evident when he replied “The Lord is My Shepherd”. Family was everything, a principle he upheld every day with every fiber of his being.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as loving, selfless, feisty, and quite the looker; his sister-in-law Rebecca Fisher even commenting that he resembled Mel Gibson. He found joy and purpose in uplifting those around him, never hesitating to extend a helping hand or a listening ear.
As we bid farewell to H. James “Jim” Payne, we take solace in knowing that his memory will continue to guide and inspire us. His was a life that touched many, and his memory will be a beacon of love and selflessness for generations to come. Jim’s departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his influence will remain as a foundation upon which his family will continue to build.
