Winter Weather threatens Michiana

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect for the Michiana area, including Southwest Michigan, starting at 10 AM. Between two and four inches of snow is expected before tomorrow morning. Plan on the Friday evening commute being impacted by slippery road conditions.

Former ISP trooper arrested on drug charges

A man who was briefly an Indiana State Police Trooper was arrested on drug charges in Marshall County on Wednesday. 46-year-old Nathan Vanderaa of Plymouth was arrested after an investigation and faces charges of dealing and possession of meth. Vanderaa is being held on a $250,000 cash bond.

Authorities name two arrested in truck stop robbery

Officials have released the names of the two people arrested on a felony charge of armed robbery. 30-year-old Todd Anthony Forker and 50-year-old Gina Lee Stevens, both of Stevensville, were arraigned on Thursday. The robbery happened just after 4 AM at JD’s Truck Stop on December 21. Police say a masked man entered the truck stop, armed with a pistol visible in his coat pocket, and demanded money from an employee. The man ran from the business before police arrived.

Proposed chicken farm gets unfavorable zoning recommendation

A proposed chicken farm property in Elkhart County has gotten an unfavorable zoning recommendation after complaints from neighbors. The Elkhart County Plan Commission voted unanimously against the recommendation to rezone the land on County Road 26, west of County Road 113. An official decision regarding rezoning of the property will be made by county commissioners on February 17.

Three Oaks (MI) lifts boil water order

The Village of Three Oaks has lifted the temporary boil water order put in place earlier this week. Coliform bacteria were found during routine sampling. Officials say the test samples are now free of contamination, and they’ve been given clearance from EGLE to lift the advisory.

Hoosier lawmakers laying groundwork tax dollars

Indiana lawmakers are already laying the groundwork for how to handle the state’s money over the next two years. With a new session starting Wednesday, the state legislature is faced with growing calls for property tax relief. House Speaker Todd Huston says that’s the job of the State Senate, and then they will consider whatever the Senate sends them in late February. He says they are also beginning to craft the state’s two-year budget but won’t have a better idea on that until the next revenue forecast comes out in April.

LA wildfire death toll reaches 10

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that the death toll from the fires currently ravaging Los Angeles has risen to 10. There was a glimmer of good news last night, as it was confirmed that the massive Palisades Fire was now considered to be six percent contained. Los Angeles police arrested a possible arson suspect yesterday afternoon in connection with the Kenneth Fire. AccuWeather now estimates that the total damage from the Los Angeles fires could reach $150 billion.
