Sammie D. Young, affectionately known as Papa Sam, passed away peacefully at his home in Dowagiac, Michigan, on May 18, 2023, after a brave battle with cancer. Born on December 15, 1945, in Sunflower, Indianola Mississippi, Sam was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many.

Sam was known for his friendly nature, generous spirit, and handy skills. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it was fixing a broken household item or providing support to a friend in need. His generosity extended beyond his family and friends.

One of Sam’s greatest joys in life was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. He was their biggest fan, attending countless games and events to cheer them on from the sidelines. His love and devotion to his family were evident in every aspect of his life, and his presence at these events will be dearly missed.

In his leisure time, Sam enjoyed fishing, collecting antiques, bird watching and gardening. His love for fishing began in his childhood, growing up near the Mississippi River, and continued throughout his life as he shared his passion with his children and grandchildren. He loved to share vegetables from his gardens, and making sure his bird feeders were filled with seed was always a priority.

Sam’s life was marked by his resilience and determination. His ability to find joy in the simple things, such as spending time with loved ones or enjoying a beautiful day outdoors, was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Sam is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Young of Dowagiac; Samantha Young of Dowagiac; Selena (Michael) Dudley of Holland; Yvette Young of Dowagiac; seventeen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, three brothers, John Young of Dowagiac; Richard (Beverly) Young of Louisiana; Roy (Shavonne) Stewart of Ohio; his ex-wife and mother of his children, Yvonne Young of Dowagiac; along with a host of extended family, who will continue to hold him dear in their hearts. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched, the friendships he forged, and the love and laughter he shared with those he held dear.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alonzo Young Sr, mother, Viola Pete, brothers, Alonzo Young Jr. and Troy Stewart, along with his son, Toby Young.

As we mourn the loss of Papa Sam, we also celebrate the life of a man who was truly one of a kind. His unwavering dedication to his family, his generous heart, and his infectious spirit will never be forgotten. Though he may be gone from this world, his legacy will live on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A private committal will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Niles.
