Clean Off Your Bookshelves, Share with a Purpose in the Community
St. Joseph First United Methodist Church at 2950 Lakeview Ave, St. Joseph Michigan is sponsoring a community-wide outreach project collecting children’s books during the month of July 2017. Books can be left at the church starting in July on Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm and on Sunday from 8:30am until noon. There will be signage to indicate the book drop area through door number 2.
This book drive seeks to GIVE books to children so that they may have one of their own, not just to borrow one. Many children in the Benton Harbor community do not have easy access to transportation to get to the public library and check out books in the summer. Elementary school libraries are closed for the summer months. Donations of children’s books can include age levels from pre-school through middle school or 2 -14 years of age. Pre-school board books, picture books, learning to read books, adventure, science, mystery, history, any kind of books written and illustrated for children. Many of these types of books are classics and have been well-loved by children for many years. Those who may wish to donate a check to purchase new books may make the check out to Benton Harbor Sunrise Rotary Club or St. Joseph First United Methodist Church.
If you have books sitting on your shelf that have outlived your childhood, or that of your children or grandchildren, please consider cleaning off that shelf and donating them during this drive.
Donations will be distributed, free of charge, by the Benton Harbor Sunrise Rotary club. The Rotary Club goal of literacy in the community has a wonderful outreach program to distribute age appropriate books upon request.
Summer can be lots of fun if children live in a neighborhood with plenty of other children to play with but sometimes a book can become a ‘best friend’ when a child is alone.
