The National Day of Prayer is NOT cancelled. It is a virtual event this year. A “Prayer Call in Berrien County” has taken the place of the physical event, previously held outside the Berrien County courthouse. Rain or Shine the event will be Thursday, April 30 and May 7 at 12 noon. Participants dial 701-801-6523 to join the call or visit the Facebook event.
Sheriff Paul Bailey will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and ministers from Berrien County and across the country pray for the United States of America, Michigan, and Berrien County. People who dial in are encouraged to pray. The Thursday prayer calls started in March and have been leading up to May 7.
The weekly prayer calls took off during the National State of Emergency in obedience to the theme Pray God’s Glory Across the Earth (Habakkuk 2:14). “There is a spiritual awakening and people from across the globe are turning to God. Southwest Michigan is ready for revival. The vision is “#1k2pray” in Berrien County, and the prayer line will hold it,” explained Carla Gray Weiser, coordinator of the event.
A virtual event is no longer confined to one geographical area. Volunteers who have generously donated their time include: Pastor Jay Haynes (Benton Harbor), Pastor Phillip Haner (South Haven), Bishop Billy Long (Benton Harbor), Reverend Allen Weiser (St. Joseph), First Lady Denise Lane (Benton Harbor),Pastor Ron Rayon (St Joseph), First Lady Sherry Langston (L’Anse/Baraga), Pastor Mark Johnson (Elkhart, Indiana), Brother Matt (Israel), Pastor Ernest Dumaresq (Creve Coeur, Missouri), Evangelist Ginger Zimmerman (Vandalia, Illinois), and Chaplain Michelle Boudreaux (Houston, Texas).
First responders, healthcare workers, and seven focus areas are prayed over, as well as requests given by people who dial in. The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May. A local event has been held in Berrien County since 1985.
Special thanks are given to local businesses for their financial support and in-kind donations: Pastor Ron Rayon of Grace Christian Center in St. Joseph; Pastor Dan Head of Covenant Christian Church in Benton Harbor; Tom Ackermann of the Get Away in Bridgman; Jeff Rice of Rapid Print in Benton Harbor; and Glen Head of MailMax of Far Ahead Advertising Inc in Benton Harbor.
